Tim Horning's entrepreneurial spirit was ignited in Alaska, where at age 16 he began fashioning log cabins with an ax and chainsaw. He continued his education in Alaska, where he also studied accounting and business management and began a successful career in commercial and residential rental management. Then, the price of oil plummeted, plunging Alaska into depression. With his livelihood threatened, he decided to head South. It was 1986 when he discovered Pagosa Springs. Though in a depressed economic state at that time as well, Tim recognized the opportunity, knowing that with Pagosa's beauty, it was only a matter of time before the area boomed. He set out and established Southwest Custom Builders, Inc.
Since that time he has produced more than 300 structures around town and has held several business leadership positions, including President of the Pagosa Springs Chapter of the Home Builders Association, President of the Archuleta Economic Development Association, and member of the Pagosa Springs Chamber of Commerce. Tim explains his reasons for long-term success is personal responsibility and integrity.
"It's very simple. You simply do what you say you're going to do, in the time you say you're going to do it, for what you told the people you were going to do it for. There are a lot of qualified people that simply miss these very basic rules," explains Tim.
